About the Presentation:
The demand for sustainable solutions has placed unprecedented emphasis on recyclability and compostability of packaging materials. Water-based barrier coatings are increasingly accepted as one of the sustainable alternatives because of their inherent compostability and/or recyclability and ability to provide the required performance in flexible packaging applications.
Mica Corporation has developed several innovative water-based coatings for oxygen barrier as well as barrier to water, oil, and grease. In this presentation, we will introduce two water-based coatings for oxygen barrier, and water, oil and grease barrier. We will demonstrate their respective barrier properties, along with recyclability or compostability. We will also discuss end use applications for each of these new coatings.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Yong Zheng is a Technical Service and Development Scientist at Mica Corporation. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Texas Tech University. Prior to joining Mica Corporation, Yong spent 16 years finding technical solutions for customers and driving market development strategies for industry giants such as SK Geo Centric, Dow Chemical, and Evergreen Packaging. He has extensive experience helping to develop and find new markets for polyethylene and copolymer products, such as ethylene acrylic acid, ionomer, and MAH grafted polyethylene.
Yong holds 12 patents and has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and white papers for publications such as Polymer Engineering and Science, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, and the Journal of Plastic Film and Sheeting. Yong is an active member of the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI).
