TAPPI and Mica Corporation are proud to announce Katelyn Gyurich as the recipient of the 2024 TAPPI International Flexible Packaging and Extrusion Division - Daniel Siegel Memorial Scholarship. Established in 2010 by Mica Corporation and the Siegel family, this scholarship honors the ideals of Mica’s founder, Daniel Siegel. Dan deeply valued education and was an involved supporter of TAPPI, sharing his knowledge to increase sustainability and foster the industry’s future leaders.
Jeffrey Siegel, President of Mica Corporation, and Jaclyn Epstein, Chief Operating Officer of Mica Corporation presented Katelyn Gyurich as the winner of the scholarship at the 2024 TAPPI FlexPack PLACE conference in San Diego, CA. “We are pleased to award Katelyn with the Daniel Siegel Memorial Scholarship and we are excited to see her future contributions to the industry,” said Siegel.
Katelyn is a student at Western Michigan University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Paper Engineering and Chemical Engineering. She is an active member of TAPPI Ts'ai Lun student organization and Lee Honors College, consistently earning a place on the Dean’s List at WMU.
Katelyn is passionate about the flexible packaging industry and is fascinated by advancements in packaging design for sustainability, such as switching from plastics to paper and creating biodegradable packaging. Katelyn said, “When I think about my future, I see myself here. I will be a part of this change.”
Over the last decade, the Daniel Siegel Scholarship has helped some of the best and brightest rising stars in the packaging industry continue their education at universities such as Clemson and Washington State. In 2024, the scholarship value was increased from $4,000 to $7,000.
